As we are in an election year for U.S. presidential and congressional races, students from across the state were allowed the opportunity to practice their citizen right with the Iowa Youth Straw Poll.
Organized by the Iowa Secretary of State’s Office, the poll was conducted last Tuesday, and results have been released for several schools that were registered in the Raccoon Valley Radio listening area. For Perry Middle School, Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders received the most votes in the presidential race with 49, with incumbent Republican Donald Trump coming in at second with 17. In the U.S. Senate race Democratic candidate Kimberly Graham came in first with 33 votes and incumbent Republican Joni Ernst reached second with 20. For the U.S. Representative race, incumbent Democrat Cindy Axne had the most votes with 36, and Republican former representative David Young had 16.
At West Central Valley Middle School President Trump received the most votes at 52, and Democratic candidate Andrew Yang came in second with 23. In the congressional races Sen. Ernst came in first with 40 votes and Democratic candidate Michael Franken received the second most votes with 25. Former representative Republican David Young won with 43 votes and incumbent Democrat Cindy Axne collected 36.
Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center Junior High School also participated, with President Trump winning with 17 votes and Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren coming in second with two votes. Ernst received the most votes in her race with 19, and in the representative race Young won with 15 votes while Axne had one.
Statewide, in the Republican presidential race President Trump had the most votes out of three candidates with 8,858, and of the 12 Democratic candidates Yang earned the most votes with 3,862. For the rest of the state straw poll results, visit here.
