Now that there is significant amounts of snow on the ground, snowmobiles are starting to be more prevalent in Iowa.
Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams advises motorists to be aware of increased snowmobile activity.
“So if you see snowmobiles going down into the ditch in front of you, just slow up in case one of them decides to turn out in front of you. They cross intersections quite a bit so just keep in mind that they are out there and they’re going to be out there.”
Likewise for snowmobilers, Williams recommends watching out for other motorists when looking to cross the roadway or at intersections. He shares other reminders for snowmobilers to be aware of.
“If we get a lot of snow to where the drifts are deep and it’s still soft, just keep in mind there are a lot of culverts. Look for the orange posts signifying that there’s a culvert there and then of course (watch out for) the guidewires. We have had snowmobilers hit guidewires and culverts in the past.”
Greene County Recorder Marcia Tasler reminds anyone operating a snowmobile, you must renew registration and permit for the year. The cost is $40.50 for a renewal and permit.
