With the 2020 Iowa State Legislature now in session, many people have begun to look ahead at issues and bills that could be addressed over the next several months.

State Representative Chris Hagenow, (R) District 19, says one thing he believes they’ll at least look at this year involves child care funding. “Currently, the way that we provide subsidies for child care for folks on the lower end of the income spectrum isn’t structured very well. And (you) reach a point where an individual can get to a certain income level and their child care subsidies drop off all together, and it’s referred to as the ‘cliff effect.’ Too often you’ll see individuals turning down pay raises or quitting their jobs because they simply can’t afford to advance in their career. And that’s not the way you want to have that.”

Hagenow says the Legislature will look at reforming the way the subsidies are allocated, in order to give people incentive to get into and stay in the workforce and advance.
