Now that the calendar has turned over to 2020, a big thing on the mind of municipalities throughout the country is the upcoming Census.

Every 10 years the United States conducts a population count, in order to get an accurate assessment of how people are distributed. However, as Perry City Administrator Sven Peterson points out, the Census is also critical for cities due to the impact it has on state and federal funding. “It is the best thing you can possibly do for the community, because so much of our funding is based on population. So as our population grows as more people move to town, the more some of our funds increase. (It’s) really important for us to get as accurate of a count as possible. We want the community to be very involved in that, so look for a lot of communications from us on that.”

The City of Perry will be forming a complete count committee in the coming months, which Peterson says will be tasked with communicating with residents and encouraging participation in the Census. On a broader scope, Peterson is also a part of the statewide committee, as appointed by Governor Kim Reynolds. The official Census Day will be Wednesday, April 1st.
