The Heart of Iowa Activities Conference basketball season reaches the halfway point tomorrow night. When Greene County hosts Saydel (Des Moines) in the middle school gym in Jefferson, the girl/boy doubleheader will bring with it some similarities, and not all are positive. Both girls’ teams are winless overall and both boys’ squads are without a conference victory.
The Eagles are 0-9 in girls’ basketball and they average just 15 points a game while allowing 57.6 per contest. The Saydel girls are making only 15 percent of their shots from the field, less than eight percent from three-point range, and turn the ball over an average of 28 times per contest. The Rams are 0-8 and are only slightly better than the Eagles in points per game and shooting percentages. Turnovers are nearly identical.
On the boys’ side, both are 0-6 in conference play with Saydel at 1-6 overall and the Rams at 1-7. Both boys’ teams are riding six game losing streaks. The Rams score nearly twice the number of points per game than Saydel, at 53 to 27, but the Eagles actually are allowing fewer points per game than the Rams and are turning the ball over fewer times per game than Greene County.
Both games can be heard Friday night on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. Coverage starts at 5:45 p.m. with tip-off for the girls at 6 p.m. with the boys’ game to follow.
