We are winding down one of the final hunting seasons of the year in Iowa with the late muzzleloader season.
According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, late muzzleloader season is from December 23rd-January 10th. Greene County Conservation Director Dan Towers says this season can be popular, but also difficult for hunters.
“It’s a tough season because the deer are herded up, it’s winter, and you’ve got 80 eyes watching and alert (for hunters), and the success rate goes down. Through the other gun seasons the success rate is usually 35-40-percent, but during that late muzzleloader season, the success rate drops to 25-percent.”
Towers adds, despite it being a tougher hunting season, late muzzleloader includes a lot of one-on-one hunting and it can be an aesthetic hunt.
