The year may be winding down for some, but for the West Central Valley FFA chapter December has been busy with community service, competitions, and more.
The month began with their fruit sale, for which they’ve sold $23,000 worth of product for a profit of $7,000 to the chapter. President Kaila Findley says they still have some fruit and other food items for sale, and those interested can contact the high school. They also did a monthly activity with the fourth grade students, and for their monthly community service project they made tie blankets for the Community Care Center in Stuart and Hiatt Middle School in Des Moines. Additionally, FFA members each “adopted a resident” for the month, giving them holiday gifts at the Community Care Center.
While winter break is impending, Findley says the chapter’s already at work for 2020, “Well, we are starting to prepare for our spring contests. So sub districts happens in the early spring and then we move on to districts and state and a lot of those contests require a lot of prep work. So right now we’re trying to figure out who’s doing what so that we can put together practice schedules.”
Findley adds her chapter competed for the first time at the 25th Annual Beef Scholarship Extravaganza earlier this month, which tests students knowledge on all aspects of the beef industry and beef cattle management issues.
