The year 2020 promises to be an exciting year for elections, though the first one on the calendar for residents in the Perry School District will be slightly lower profile than others.
However, Superintendent Clark Wicks emphasizes that it’s no less important. The District will have a special election on March 3rd for approval of a revenue purpose statement for the state’s Secure and Advanced Vision for Education (SAVE) fund, commonly referred to as the Statewide Penny for Infrastructure. This past year, the State Legislature extended the sunset for the SAVE program, but with the stipulation that districts have to get approval to use the funds through a public vote.
Wicks points out, there will be no financial impact on the voters to approve the revenue purpose statement, and the funds will be used for a needed project. “It doesn’t mean anything else for the taxpayers, it’s the same thing that we have right now. It isn’t going to change a thing, except that it will help our school district tremendously. Specifically, we’re looking to borrow against the SAVE to help the Perry Middle School, the renovation that we want to do. Again, that’s a 1960-1961 building, so there’s some renovation to be done with that.”
Wicks adds, there will be more information on the election as we get closer to March 3rd, with the District planning to do an educational campaign similar to what they did for the recent bond referendum.
