Two entities in Dallas County were recently recipients of state grants for the purposes of maintaining the past.
The Adel and Dallas County Historic Preservation Commissions were each awarded funds from the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs. The Department gave $90,000 to 10 communities through its Certified Local Government program for historic preservation. The Adel Commission received $1,500 to help purchase 10 bronze plaques to mark historic buildings in the downtown district. Each is currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Dallas County Commission was awarded $6,000, which will aid their nomination of the Seth Dayton Stagecoach Inn to the National Register. The Dayton House is one of the last remaining stagecoach stops in the United States. The IDCA gives annual grants to local commissions, which encourage governmental partnerships, provide training and technical assistance, and support preservation of historic resources.
