Two Greene County High School seniors will perform in next month’s South Central Iowa Bandmasters Association (SCIBA) Honor Band.

Emily Hofer and Kaitlin Tjostem qualified for the 11-12 Band as principal bassoon and second chair, first part oboe. Part of the audition includes students playing two scales and pieces of concert songs called etudes. Tjostem talks about how her audition went and her reaction to making it to SCIBA for a second consecutive year.

“I thought my audition went way better than it did last year. I felt my audition from last year was horrible. But this year it went a lot better. Well I was surprised, pleasantly surprised. I’d say, I figured I would’ve had a good shot since I made it last year. I was pleased.”

Hofer normally plays flute, but she talks about when she started playing the bassoon and why she wanted to audition for SCIBA on the instrument.

“I started off on flute in fifth grade and I transitioned over to bassoon my tenth grade year, and I just worked really diligently at it. And I was able to be the first chair bassoonist last year as well as this year. And so I just really took a liking to the instrument.”

The concert will be at Ankeny High School on January 11th.
