The driver of the vehicle that collided with the Dallas County “Freedom Rock” Saturday morning has been identified.
According to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office, at around 4:30 a.m. on December 7th, a vehicle driven by 21-year-old Kevin Villa of Perry was travelling north on Highway 169 through Minburn. For unknown reasons he swerved left upon reaching the curve in the highway. He then went through the grass and hit the Freedom Rock, causing it to tip over on its north side. Villa was transported by Dallas County Emergency Medical Services to MercyOne West Des Moines Medical Center with an ankle injury. There were no other passengers in the vehicle.
The incident is currently under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office, though Sheriff Chad Leonard told Raccoon Valley Radio that excessive speed was likely a factor in the crash. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $12,000, and there was around $8,100 in damage to the rock and the lighting. The Freedom Rock was dedicated in October, and Leonard says repairs will likely be extensive. Raccoon Valley Radio will bring you more information as it becomes official.
