A Stuart man faces federal gun and drug charges after allegedly shooting at four law enforcement officers last October.
U.S. Attorney Marc Krickbaum and Adair County Attorney Melissa S. Larsen announced Tuesday that a federal grand jury has returned an indictment charging 52-year-old Randall Lee Comly with being a felon in possession of a firearm; possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute; and possessing, brandishing, and discharging a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. If convicted, Comly faces at least 25 years to up-to-life in prison. Under federal law, there is no parole. His current attempted murder charges in state court are dismissed without prejudice to allow the federal charges to proceed first.
Comly was arrested and made his initial appearance in federal court in Des Moines. Trial is set for February 3rd, 2020. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives; Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Adair County Sheriff’s Office, Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office, Stuart Police Department, and Adair County Attorney’s Office assisted in the investigation.
