The long-awaited transition of the Dallas County driver’s license function from the Treasurer’s Office to the Department of Transportation has arrived, though for the next couple months people probably won’t notice a huge difference.

As of Thursday, the DOT is officially in charge of driver’s license issuance in the County. They are currently operating out of the building at 918 Court Street in Adel, which for the last several years has been the location for the County-run station. This is expected to continue until January 21, 2020, at which time the DOT plans to move the station to its new location at 1156 SE Ashworth Road in Waukee. The locale is part of the Kettlestone Plaza, neighboring a UnityPoint Health Clinic and Jimmy John’s sandwich shop.

In the interim the County Board of Supervisors approved to sublease the current building to the State. During that time, the DOT will adapt the new facility to their needs and address some of the expected issues with the site, such as parking. While the function was under the Treasurer’s umbrella, Dallas County issued almost twice as many driver’s licenses as any another county-run station in Iowa. That spurred the State Legislature to pass a resolution last year to transition the service from the County to the DOT.

As a reminder, the driver’s license station will have different hours under the DOT, which will include being open Saturdays and closed most Mondays. The hours through the rest of the year can be found below.
