A recent change of recycling services has for the most part been smooth for the City of Jefferson.

Public Works Director Dave Morlan says since the Genesis Development processing plant closed in Jefferson, the City has contracted with Carroll Recycling Center. He notes they are continuing to provide curbside pick-up for residents and businesses, along with moving the central drop-off location to the intersection of Cedar and Perry streets. Morlan gives some reminders when recyclables are dropped off.

“There’s a brown, six-yard dumpster there for cardboard to be placed in. We would ask people, if they could please break the boxes down when they put them in there, that would help us out tremendously. We are getting the drop boxes re-lettered to show where to put the glass –  because we are taking glass again – but the tin, glass, aluminum, that sort of thing goes in the front half of the drop box, and the mixed paper goes in the back of them.”

Additionally, due to the high volume of cardboard being recycled, the City is purchasing another dumpster. Morlan admits it takes crews more time to transport recyclables to Carroll. It was mentioned at the most recent public works committee meeting that Churdan, Rippey and Dana have discontinued curbside recycling, while Grand Junction and Paton will stop at the end of the year. However, drop boxes will remain in each community. Morlan notes any Jefferson resident can obtain a green recycling bin from City Hall.
