Tuesday morning, the Dallas County Board of Supervisors held the second of two canvasses for the recent city and school election, making the results official.
Auditor Julia Helm pointed out that two canvasses were required for this election, due to many of the races crossing county lines and needing the canvasses from the other jurisdictions. However, even with the other counties reporting, there were no changes in the initial results that were revealed November 5th, with the exception being the races that required write-in candidates because no one was on the ballot.
One particular race of note was for the Perry School Board, where two write-in candidates, Erin Holmes and Max Christensen, managed to get 201 and 194 votes, respectively. However, the late write-in campaign for the two individuals wasn’t enough to overcome the three incumbents on the ballot, Linda Andorf, Kenia Alarcon, and Jim Lutmer, who received 384, 341, and 332 votes, respectively. The canvass also confirmed the winners for the hotly contested seats on the Adel-DeSoto-Minburn School Board, with Tim Canney, Nicole West, and Heith Hockenberry winning the three open seats, and Bart Banwart selected for the vacant seat. Some notable write-in winners included Jason Tigges for the West Central Valley School Board, District 2, and Troy Janssen for the Woodward-Granger School Board, District 1.
Helm said around 8,000 Dallas County residents voted in the election out of a possible 62,000 registered voters, a 14% voter turnout. She added, it’s hard to gauge whether combining the elections affected the amount of voters, though this year saw a bigger school election turnout than two years ago. However, it was far under the city election numbers from 2017, when the local option sales tax measure brought lots of voters to the polls. Helm felt they will learn more about voter turnout during the next city and school election in 2021.
