When Kuemper Catholic (Carroll) and Mount Vernon play at 2:30 p.m. for the Class 3A Iowa high school volleyball championship, there will be more than one connection to Greene County. The 35-10 Mustangs, seeded fifth, meet the second seeded Knights (37-4) in Cedar Rapids.
Kuemper started the postseason with a three games to none sweep over Greene County. Many of the girls on both squads know each other due to the close proximity of Greene and Carroll Counties.
Roger and Rose Olhausen of Jefferson have a granddaughter who is the starting setter at Mount Vernon. Summer Brand is a senior who leads the state in the number of assists, and is among the leaders in all of Iowa in assists per set.
Both teams needed five sets to get into the title match with MV topping Union (La Porte City) and Kuemper getting by fellow Hawkeye 10 Conference member Red Oak.
