With deer being more prevalent on the roadways this time of year, there tends to be an increased number of deer carcusses as well.

Iowa Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Jeremy King says a salvage tag can be issued to those who want to take a deer carcass from the side of the road. He describes how someone can claim a deer carcass.

“The person who hits the deer, if it’s with a vehicle unfortunately, they have first say at the deer. So if they hit the deer, and the deer is dead or it needs to be put down, if they decide they want to use it (for) meat or keep its rack, they get the first call. After that, it’s first come, first served.”

King notes it’s illegal for someone to cut the antlers off and abandon the rest of the deer. He says he issues deer salvage tags, but the individual must take the entire carcass. Contact King for a salvage tag or for more information about the process at 712-250-0061.
