We’ve already had the first snowfall of this season, and with likely more to come before spring, the City of Perry is ready to tackle the winter’s street maintenance challenges.

Assistant Public Works Director Josh Wuebker says his crew’s two chief weapons against winter weather are salt and snow plows, both of which are ready for use. “We actually started getting all our salt in June, so we’re full. The door will hardly shut on the salt dome where we store it, so we have plenty of salt! We’re ready to go that way. We just had all of our trucks serviced (to) make sure everything works – you know, lights and everything like that. Drivers will be putting their plows on here, (but) if something did happen we can throw them on within ten minutes a truck, so it’s not that big of a deal. But yeah, we’re ready to go!”

Wuebker adds, the tractor they use for mowing during the rest of the year will be converted to a snowblower for winter, which makes plowing the streets after particularly heavy snow events a lot easier. Finally, Wuebker reminds residents of the City’s snow ordinance, which states you can’t park on streets during or 24 hours after a half-inch of snow accumulation. Anyone in violation of the ordinance will be warned first, and fined after that, with the added possibility of towing the vehicle if the snowfall is severe enough.
