The fall sports season officially concluded over the weekend for AC/GC.
During the fall, AC/GC found success from all three of their sports. The Charger football team came out of the shadows with their first winning season as AC/GC. Year two of the Cody Mathewson era started with a four-game winning streak to start the season, avenging three 2018 losses along the way. AC/GC went on to break multiple records including most points score in a single game after their 72-33 victory over Woodward Academy. The Chargers finished 6-3 and finishing fourth in a very competitive district. They finished 14th in the final RPI standing and was the first team left out of the state playoffs. Sophomore Gavin Cornelison set the all-time AC/GC single season rushing record 1,103 yards. The Chargers have found their workhorse in Cornelison as he is just a sophomore and will continue to grow with this up and coming Charger football program.
The football team wasn’t the only squad to break records in a breakout season. The AC/GC volleyball team came out of the gates on fire going 15-1 in their first 16 matches. The Chargers found ways to win in every way possible. They had games where they had to go all five sets to find victory, then had other nights that were much quicker. AC/GC went on to shatter the previous record for wins in a season finishing with a 28-8 record. Their season ultimately ended in the regional semi-finals, falling to Underwood 3-1. Individually, The Chargers were led by Chloe Largent who led the state with 597 kills. Along with football standout Gavin Cornelison, Largent is only a sophomore and is just getting started at AC/GC.
The Charger cross country squad made the jump to Class 2A and did not miss a beat. On the girls side, Kate Crawford capped off a phenomenal career and led the Chargers all the way to the big dance. The girls qualified as a team to the state championships and dominated the state qualifying race. At the state championship race, Crawford finished in third place overall with a time of 19:05. Rylee Sloss and Kiersten Knobbe were the next two Chargers to finish coming in 14th and 30th respectively. As a team, AC/GC finished higher than any Guthrie Center or Adair Casey team that came before them with their fifth place finish.
Thanks to great leadership and young talent, all three fall sports programs at AC/GC are set to be just as exciting in 2020.
