Round one of the Class 2A high school football playoffs is behind the Greene County Rams and the focus now becomes the quarterfinals. Following Friday’s 35-21 victory at Des Moines Christian heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com, it’s on to the quarterfinals. Coach Caden Duncan’s Rams are on the road for a third straight game after ending the regular season in Ida Grove, then opening the playoffs in Urbandale. This Friday means a trip close to the Minnesota border to Algona to face the Bulldogs.
Among the preseason goals the Rams had was playing inside the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, meaning two postseason wins and advancing to the semifinals. The Rams are now one victory away from doing just that. The 9-1 Rams are number 8 in RPI (Ratings Percentage Index) and the task at hand is to win on the home field of Algona, third in RPI and 10-0 on the season.
Unlike OABCIG and DMC, Algona features the running game. The Bulldogs do have an outstanding receiver, but it’s run first. In the first round of the playoffs, a 35-14 victory over Central Lyon/George-Little Rock, Algona threw six passes, completing just one, for a meager four yards, and they had one picked off. the bulldogs did what they do best, and that’s run the football, for 326 yards.
Greene County is more balanced between the run and pass. The Rams had 321 yards of offense vs. DMC on Friday with 177 through the air and 144 on the ground.
Friday’s game from Algona will be broadcast on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. Coverage begins at 6 p.m. with kickoff at 7 p.m.
