It’s fall, which means many homeowners are raking up leaves. With that in mind, here are some safety tips to avoid back injuries.

Director of Rehab with 21st Century Rehabilitation at Greene County Medical Center Deb Morton says before you rake leaves, start by warming up your body.

“Like taking a short walk around the yard or doing some stretching exercises such as arm circles, forward and side bendings and rotation of the trunk. It’s also important to make sure that the length of your rake is good for you and that it’s not too heavy. If it is too long, or too short, or too heavy it can add stress to your back, neck and shoulders.”

Morton suggests taking frequent breaks, for instance having a rest after each quadrant of your yard is completed. She also recommends staying hydrated by drinking water and knowing your body’s limitations by not overdoing yard work.
