It’s Greene County in Urbandale tonight to begin the Class 2A football playoffs on the home field of the Des Moines Christian Lions. Both are 8-1 and top 10 in both the polls and RPI (Ratings Percentage Index).
The similarities on paper are extensive. For example, DMC is tops in 2A in scoring per game at 49 points while the Rams are sixth at 40.5. DMC also leads 2A teams in kickoff return average and the Rams are second. Greene County is second in punt return average and DMC is fifth. Greene County’s 15 interceptions are second in 2A, while the Lions 14 fumble recoveries tie them for sixth in the class.
Individually, quarterback Jackson Waring of DMC can both run and pass the ball and he’s throw for 22 touchdowns and just three interceptions in eight games. The Lions are eighth in total offense.
The Rams are sixth in 2A total offense and sixth in passing yards. QB Brent Riley has 2,025 yards through the air with 27 touchdowns and only five INTs. Colby Kafer’s 1,256 yards rushing rank him fourth in 2A and Carter Morton is fourth in receiving yards in 2A at 790 yards and 11 touchdowns in eight games. Morton is also one of 2A top kickoff and punt returners.
