Springbrook State Park in Guthrie County is hosting a couple of free events this Saturday for avid historians or those who simply enjoy the outdoors.

The day will begin with a hands-on educational event about the ancient hunting tool called an atlatl from 9-10 a.m. Attendees will meet at the campground gazebo, and will get to practice this antiquated technology as they launch six-foot-long darts at a “wooly mammoth target.”

Park goers can stick around for a “Hike Through Time” with Iowa Department of Natural Resources Training Specialist Anne Riordan. She describes how the hike will trek through different eras, “We start in the present time and then we hike back visiting little points of interest throughout the park. Our CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) history is pretty strong in this park so we hit some of that and we go on back through time until we get to about two million years ago. We’ve got some geologic history here that’s kind of evident when you stop to look.”

Riordan mentions that the last glacier that was in Iowa stretched to the edge of Springbrook, which she says has visible remnants in present day. The hike will begin at 10 a.m. at the campground gazebo, and will last until noon.
