The Perry Parks and Recreation Department is once again inviting aspiring swimmers in the area to join their winter swim team, with registration open now.
Aquatics Director Kami Kirchner says the season will start on November 10th and will run through February. The cost to participate is $80 for one child, and $60 for any subsequent children in the same family. Kirchner says the team is for boys and girls ages 6-18. However, she emphasizes that the main requirement to join is the ability to front crawl from one end of the McCreary Community Building pool to the other unassisted. If there are 5-year-olds who can do that, Kirchner says they’re welcome to participate. Kirchner encourages families to get involved, as she feels it offers many benefits. “I would just say that it’s a really fun team. Everyone that I’ve talked to has really enjoyed it, it gives your kids a chance to be involved in something. And along the way they’re learning lifelong skills for keeping themselves safe in and around the water.”
The meets are held on Saturdays, with three of them in Perry and the rest requiring a little bit of travel. However, Kirchner points out that participants can sign up for which meets they’d like to participate in, so they don’t need to worry about rescheduling vacations. Additionally, the swimmers will get to pick which events they compete in, focusing on building on their strengths or shoring up their weaknesses, or some combination of the two.
