As word spread of the “miracle baby” of Jefferson, who stopped breathing and was brought back to life, community support has been growing, but none bigger than the family of the newborn to the first responders from that day.
We’ve previously reported Brooklyn Smithson and Monty Westphalls’ daughter Cecillia was just four-days-old when she stopped breathing on June 12th. Jefferson Police Captain Heath Enns and Officer Cole Jackson were first on the scene and Enns performed CPR on the baby. Cecillia’s grandmother, Christy Smithson, expresses her gratitude to Captain Enns for what he did that day.
“He was definitely our rock through everything. And since this has happened we’ve actually stayed in very close contact with him. She got to come home for a day to see how her body was going to handle her trip home, and he came over and held her. He brought her a little stuffed bear with a law enforcement patch. He’s amazing.”
Brooklyn shares her thoughts about the acts of not only Captain Enns, but everyone who was involved with transporting Cecilla to Greene County Medical Center and later to a Des Moines hospital.
“They were absolutely amazing. All of them were completely focused on her and once they were done with their jobs they came over to us and (they) were trying to comfort us, trying to help us as well once they were done helping her. It was just crazy. I have so much respect for those people. Those people are a part of my life and I would love to have them come over and see Cecillia all the time. They’re my heroes.”
Westphalls echoes Brooklyn and Christy’s comments and is grateful for everyone’s support and for the other individuals and organizations that have helped them through everything with their baby.
