The Perry Parks and Recreation Department is offering a service not typically seen in the winter, but one they’re uniquely equipped to offer: winter swim lessons.
Aquatics Director Kami Kirchner says because the pool at the McCreary Community Building is indoors and open year round, they offer lessons to kids during the summer and winter. There will be three sessions this season, with the first from November 19th through December 19th on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The second runs from January 11th through February 29th on Saturdays, and the third is from March 2nd through March 12th from Monday through Thursday. The cost to participate varies depending on which session you sign up for and if you have a rec center membership.
Registration can be done in person at the McCreary Center, or by visiting their new registration website. There is no deadline to sign up, but space is limited. Kirchner adds, the winter lessons are for novice swimmers. “For the winter session, we are only offering levels preschool, level one, level two, and level three. We are not offering any of the more advanced levels, and that’s mainly because we have a larger crowd that would like to join swim lessons in the lower levels. So I like to create as much opportunity for that as possible. Levels four, five, and six are always offered in the summer, though.”
Kirchner also points out, swim lessons are important year round, as many families vacation to warmer climates in the winter, and that’s usually accompanied by time spent around water.
