Phase two of the Dallas County Courthouse renovation project is all but wrapped up, with only a few odds and ends left to take care of on the first floor of the historic building.
At their most recent meeting, the Board of Supervisors approved a pay application of $5,049.60 to All Makes for the furnishings in the facility, which covered the release of retainage, and also approved the certificate of substantial completion for the project. While the Board was unhappy the work took longer than expected, and are expected to recoup some of the funds from the contractor Trinity Construction, they expressed happiness for how the project turned out.
Phase two involved moving the Recorder’s Office and Treasurer’s Tax Department from the west wing of the second floor to the west wing of the first, as well as relocating the Treasurer’s Motor Vehicle Department from the building it shared with the driver’s license station to the east wing of the first floor. Both Recorder Chad Airhart and Treasurer Mitch Hambleton have complimented their new spaces, though they’ve pointed out a few small details that still need to be ironed out.
Phase one of the courthouse renovation involved moving the Clerk of Court and Juvenile Court Services from the first floor to the east wing of the second, which the Auditor’s Office vacated last year. The third and final phase of the project is to construct a courtroom in the west wing of the second floor. The Farnsworth Group architecture firm is working with the County and the Fifth Judicial Court on the specifications, though it could still begin during this calendar year.
