A formal impeachment inquiry is underway for President Donald Trump, and the U.S. Representative for Iowa’s Third District comments on what led to this decision.

Congresswoman Cindy Axne (D) says the allegations that President Trump and top administration officials pressured the leaders of foreign nations to investigate his political rivals show a violation of federal laws and the U.S. Constitution, “That is a clear abuse of power, a violation of the constitution, and this is something that the President freely admitted, that he sought Ukrainian interference in the 2020 election. That undermines America’s national security, it’s a betrayal of the American people, it limits the integrity of our government and the ability for us to have clean, secure elections. And quite honestly, in the end, this is about our national security and the impact that this decision has made.”

The impeachment inquiry was instigated by a whistleblower report that President Trump allegedly made a phone call with the Ukrainian President on July 25th about investigating presidential candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden’s son, following a hold he placed on giving military aid to the country on July 18th.
