Greene County began district football with a 49-7 road win at Shenandoah on Friday night in a contest heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. First year head coach Caden Duncan’s top five ranked Rams are 5-0 overall after starting Class 2A District 9 play with a convincing victory. Greene County out gained the 1-4 Mustangs 356-1 as the defense did not allow a point for the fourth time this season, and quarterback Brent Riley threw touchdown passes to four different receivers.
The Rams were playing without standout receiver/defensive back/kick and punt returner Carter Morton due to injury, but plenty of others performed well in Morton’s absence. Riley found tight end Tyler Teeples on a three yard TD pass to open the scoring with 5:09 left in quarter number one. Bryce Stalder caught a 15 yard scoring strike from Riley with 2:21 to go in the first, followed by Will Hansen hauling in a 17 harder with 5:49 remaining in the second quarter. The last TD pass went to Jaxon Warnke and it covered 17 yards with 7:01 left in the game. The other three touchdowns were scored by Xavier Hayes on two interceptions returned for scores, and by Colby Kafer on a running play of 23 yards. Kicker Cael Fisher was a perfect seven for seven on extra points. Hayes returning two interceptions for TDs was a rarity, and both took place at nearly the same spot on the field. One covered 23 yards and the other covered 27.
The lone TD for the Mustangs came with 4:41 to go in the opening quarter and the Rams up 14-0 when Anthony Stodgily returned a kickoff 95 yards. Greene County scored the next 35 points and the last 13:08 of the game was played with the “35 point margin continuous clock” rule in effect.
The defense was stifling and the offense did not turn the ball over. That combination made it difficult for the Mustangs, who had snapped a 12-game losing streak just one week before hosting the Rams. The victory was the thirteenth for Greene County in the last 14 regular season games dating back to last season.
Next up for the Rams is the annual Homecoming game. Kuemper Catholic (1-4) visits Linduska Field on Oct. 4 on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. The Knights were the only team to pin a regular season loss on the Rams in 2018.
