A Jefferson man was sentenced to prison, following a conviction by a jury trial in Greene County.
According to court documents, 26-year-old Jeremy Orfield was sentenced to two years in prison and must register as a sex offender on the Iowa Sex Offender Registry. A jury trial found Orfield guilty of an aggravated misdemeanor for indecent contact with a child on July 25th. The jury also found him not guilty of a Class C Felony for second degree sexual abuse and a Class D Felony for lascivious acts with a child. The charges stemmed from an investigation with the Jefferson Police Department that began on July 28, 2018. An incident took place between Orfield and a then nine-year-old girl.
Court documents show Orfield’s attorney filed a motion for a new trial, claiming parts of a witness testimony conflicted with other testimonies and should be considered hearsay. County Attorney Thomas Laehn filed a motion to deny a new trial saying the information given at trial was not conflicting and should not be considered hearsay. District Court Judge Dale Ruigh ruled in favor of Laehn’s motion.
