We looked at some of the offensive players yesterday for Greene County and Gilbert prior to their non-district football game in Jefferson at Linduska Field tomorrow night. Today, we share some defensive numbers.
The Rams are ranked fifth in Class 2A with a 3-0 record. Gilbert is a 3A program and is 2-1 with a season opening loss to Webster City, followed by victories over Roland-Story (Story City) and Boone.
Gilbert is averaging 23.3 points and giving up 17.6 per game. Their three opponents have a combined 4-5 record, lead by WC’s 3-0 mark. The two victories have seen the Tigers be stingy on defense. They’ve allowed just 18 combined points in the two wins and five of the six takeaways by the Gilbert defense this season came in the two victories. They survived turning the ball over four times vs. Boone to win a close one.
Greene County is averaging 48 points per game and giving up 16 per contest in wins over Perry, Nevada and Saydel (Des Moines). The Rams gave up to points to Perry and the reserves allowed a “pick six” defensive score last week against Saydel. Both those teams are 0-3. Nevada’s only loss is to the Rams two weeks ago by a 42-41 score, when Greene County turnovers accounted for 21 of the Cubs’ points.
