With the new automated trash collection system underway in the City of Jefferson, those property owners that would like an additional garbage container can now get one.

The City Council recently approved a rate of $70 for an additional 65- or 95-gallon container. City Administrator Mike Palmer says the decision to set the same rate for either size container was a small difference in price, and the rate allows the City to break even, with the additional cost of manufacturing it, to shipping and hot-stamping the City’s logo. 

“Now when somebody buys one of these additional (containers), they own it. Plus there will be an additional trash pickup fee of-I believe now just everybody gets charged $10.75-if you have two containers you’ll get charged an additional $10.75 per month beyond that too. But the big thing is, they’ll own their own containers and that goes with them. Whereas the ones that the City distributed go with the property.”

Palmer points out the comments he’s heard from citizens has been positive. He encourages anyone who would like to purchase an additional container should contact City Hall at 515-386-2222.
