taser-x3

Time is running out to donate to a local cause in Greene County.

The Greene County Peace Officers Association is hosting a taser demonstration at half-time of the Greene County High School home varsity football game this Friday. Since this past spring, ten individuals have volunteered to be tased and have collected community donations. The person that raises the most money will be tased.

Jefferson Police Captain Heath Enns says all ten people have volunteered to be tased and on the night of the demonstration, they will have the willing participants line up and the winner will be announced. That person is required to sign a waiver before being tased. Enns describes how the demonstration will be done on Friday night.

“Typically we do a five-second run with our tasers to anybody that gets an exposure. The darts that come out of the taser, they’re usually a pretty good spread to collect more muscle groups,  to allow the electricity to flow through. But we’re going to lower that a little bit and make the darts be a little closer so it doesn’t grab as much of the muscle groups. And then probably only do a few seconds just to give a little bit of a taste of what the taser feels like.”

As a certified taser instructor, Enns will be doing the demonstration and he adds that you can feel the electricity through your body, but after a few seconds following the demonstration the individual will feel normal again. He says the taser method they use in law enforcement is a non-lethal method of subduing someone.

As of last Friday, the Jefferson Herald Editor Andy McGinn was leading the field with $337 to Greene County High School Principal Brian Phillips with $167. A donation box is at Jefferson Hy-Vee and the last day to make a donation is Thursday. All proceeds will go toward the Peace Officers Association’s community enrichment programs, like Shop With A Cop.
