Greene County’s varsity volleyball team played twice in Perry on Thursday, losing both non-conference matches. Coach Chris Heisterkamp’s team fell in the best two of three format to Ft. Dodge St. Edmond 25-16, 23-25, 6-15, and lost to Perry 25-14, 17-25, 12-15. Those losses even the season record at 2-2 and the set record 6-6.
“Our focus the last few practices has been to start strong at the first whistle. We did that and came out with the win the first game of both matches. We competed hard in the second games, but fell short in the third set of both matches. Even though we did not bring home the win, I feel encouraged with the fight we put up throughout the evening. There were so many improvements I noticed from a week ago. Great passing at times, awesome digs, harder hits, more consistent setting, and great serving all night long. There were runs of points we gave up due to passing errors under the pressure of the third sets, so it’s clear what we will be focusing on next. Our takeaway from this evening is to get better at being a team that can finish strong,” the coach commented.
The coach added unofficial stats show Brianna Osterson with 11 kills vs. St. Edmond and five against Perry. Lily Muir had eight kills vs. Perry and six against St. Edmond. Setter Aubrey Heupel had three kills in each match, while Harleigh Weir recorded four kills against Perry and two vs. the Gaels. Sophia Havens and Brooke Diekmann both had two kills vs. Perry.
Serving percentages for the Rams were very high on the night at 44 of 46 against the Gaels at (96%), and 45 of 48 (94%) vs. the Jayettes.
