It’s one of Iowa’s oldest high school football rivalries. It’s Perry and Greene County, and it’s tomorrow night in Jefferson at Linduska Field. The Perry YMCA team defeated the Jefferson high school team in 1898. Shortly thereafter, the two high school teams met and with only a few interruptions, the series has gone on. In 1928, the Rotary clubs from Jefferson and Perry donated a cowbell that stays with the winning team until the following season, when it’s brought to the field and claimed by the winning team.
The Rams overcame 22 penalties and more than 200 penalty yards in 2018 to win at Dewey Field by a 14-6 score. New head coach Caden Duncan will lead the Rams onto the field tomorrow night. It’s not only his first “Cowbell” game and first with Greene County, but his first game as a head coach.
Friday night’s game can be heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. All Greene County games this season start at 7 p.m. with coverage at six o’clock.
