With school starting in the Adel-DeSoto-Minburn School District, the administration advises the public of traffic changes to the middle and high school parking lot this year.
The District has long been concerned with the safety of student drivers during the busy parts of the day, particularly as traffic on Highway 169 continues to increase. After conferring with the Adel Police Department, the administration made the decision to try out new procedures when it comes to leaving the parking lot at dismissal each day. The main concern is when inexperienced student drivers attempt to turn left onto 169, crossing both lanes of the busy highway. As such, the District is instituting a right turn only policy for exiting the parking lot at dismissal. The left lane of Tiger Drive will be blocked to prevent left turns.
Additionally, the flow of traffic within the parking lot will be altered. The circle lot will remain unchanged, but those leaving it will only be able to turn left onto Tiger Drive. Those parking in the north lots will only be able to exit from the western section and can only turn right. Anyone parking in the east lots can only turn right onto the drive, and will need to exit onto Old Portland Road. Also, the only access into the eastern portion of the school during dismissal will be from Old Portland. The section of Tiger Drive alongside the middle school will be for buses only. Adel Police officers and school administrators will be on hand for the first several weeks of school to ensure all drivers understand the new procedures.
