Greene County Extension is offering a program to help with farm succession.
The workshop will be held September 4th and 5th from 6-9pm, with a light meal served both nights at 5:30. Topics that will be covered include: how to do a farm succession plan, proper language for estate planning, setting goals, how to implement the plan, details of gift and estate taxes, and having a family conversation. There will be additional resources provided for future planning. ISU Extension Farm Management Specialist Tim Christensen started hosting this program last year and he says it’s a growing trend in the agriculture industry.
“I get calls and talk to people everyday about situations and struggles that they’re having passing the farm down. We all know families that have been torn apart by the death in the family and trying to divide up the assets. It’s a really sad situation. It’s a really tough situation that a lot of families are in, and I feel like there’s just a need for the communities to have help working through some of those situations.”
Christensen, along with local attorney David Morain will be leading the workshop. Cost to attend is $50 per person or $175 for a family of four. Deadline to register is August 28th. To sign up, call 386-2138 or stop by the Extension office in Jefferson.
