The 150th birthday celebration for the City of Grand Junction continues today with lots going on.
The festivities start with breakfast served by the Grand Junction Library at the community center at 8am, followed by the Jack Teagarden Memorial Golf Tournament at 9am at Lakeside National Golf Course. Different contests will also take place in the morning including best beard, trivia and pie baking, with the winners announced at 10am at the community center. The oldest resident will also be honored. The Grand Junction Lions Club Car Show will be from 10am-3pm at the city park. The parade is at 11am starting at 14th and Bennett streets.
In the afternoon, the Grand Junction Horizons Club will have a box lunch picnic in the community room from noon-1pm, followed by the Greene County Singers performance at 1pm. Peoples Bank is sponsoring face painting for kids from 12:30-2pm on Main Street and the library is hosting the Blank Park Traveling Zoo from 1-5pm. The Horizons will also host an Artisan Arts and Crafts Show in the community center from 1-3pm, with kids games taking place in the green space next to the community center.
The Kennedy Museum on Hager Street and the Lincoln Highway Museum on Main Street will both be open from 2-5pm. Kickball and bags tournaments will take place at the City’s ball field at 3pm. The Greene County Cattlemen’s Association will be serving a meal on Main Street from 5-7pm. The beverage garden will also be open in the afternoon, followed by the evening’s live musical entertainment, Jamie Kelley.
Sunday wraps up the three-day event with a historical program, ““Grand Junction: 150 Years of Transportation and Transitions.” It will take place in the community center at 1pm and GJ 150 Committee member Alan Robinson will be the presenter. He talks about what his program will highlight.
“We kind of want to end on that note that 150 years look back is over transportation still here. We have our railroad, we have our highways, (and) we have wonderful Greene County paved road system. And I know with our windmills out there that’s generating funds to make more improvements to those roads for the years ahead. So we’re very excited.”
