Posting its highest point total in recent seasons the Greene County High School football team was a 55-8 winner over Clarinda Academy at Linduska Field in Jefferson on Friday night. The game was the last at home on the 2013 schedule for the Rams and they made the most of it with 28 points in the first quarter and a 48-0 lead at halftime in front of a Senior Night and Parents’ Night crowd.
The Eagles lost for the thirty-fifth time in a row dating back to early in the 2010 season. Greene County now has a winning streak of three games after starting the season 0-3. The Rams out gained the Eagles 222-69 and Greene County took advantage of four CA turnovers and some bad snaps from center to build a 28-0 lead in the first quarter and a 48-0 advantage at the half. The Rams led 55-0 at the end of the third quarter and CA scored their points in the fourth.
Sophomores Sico Boateng and Max Neese both intercepted passes and returned them for touchdowns. Boateng’s pick and return of 40 yards came in the opening quarter while Neese intercepted a pass in the second period and returned it 66 yards for a TD. The touchdowns were the first on the varsity level for both players. Boateng and senior Chance Paup recovered CA fumbles.
The other touchdowns for the Rams came from the ground game. Senior TJ Lint had a scoring run of 18 yards, with junior Dylan Hamilton scoring on runs of 15 and two yards. Junior Jordan Challen had a one yard TD run, and sophomore quarterback Daric Whipple had TD runs of one and seven yards.
Greene County is 4-4 overall and 3-2 in Class 2A District 8 while the Eagles fell to 0-8 overall and they complete district play at 0-6. Next up for the Rams is the regular season finale in Ida Grove vs. OABCIG on Oct. 25. The Falcons are 4-4 overall and 2-3 in District 8. A Greene County win could mean a second place finish in the district, but a win by OABCIG could throw the playoff chase in the district into a frenzy.
