Greene County finished the 2019 high school baseball season with 10 wins and 23 losses, certainly not the record the players, coaches, and fans envisioned at the start of the season. Even though the number of wins may have fallen short of expectations, there were two upsets of Class 2A State Tournament teams among the victories.
Coach John Hupp’s Rams knocked off Van Meter (31-3) by a 2-0 score in June at the Saydel Tournament in Des Moines, and then they came from 5-0 down to win 9-5 at home earlier this month over Underwood (26-4). Van Meter and Underwood play each other in the 2A quarterfinals tonight at Principal Park in Des Moines.
Coach Hupp talked with Raccoon Valley Radio about beating those teams. “You couldn’t help but look at that and go ‘Man, couldn’t we have been in 2A ball this year?'” The baseball sharing program between Greene County and Paton-Churdan produced an enrollment that put the Rams in Class 3A for baseball.
The third big upset for Greene County this season came in the 3A District 4 first round when the Rams beat number 8 Gilbert at Gilbert by a 2-1 score. The District 4 final saw Boone, another State Tournament team, break open a 3-2 game in the bottom of the sixth to win 7-2. The Toreadors play at Principal Park on Wednesday in the 3A quarterfinals.
