While treats like funnel cakes and icecream sound irresistible during the summer, Guthrie County Hospital and Clinics stresses the importance of managing weight and looking out for what can cause weight gain and obesity.

The science of weight loss has been of great interest to Nurse Practitioner Marcia Roenfeld, who works at the Stuart clinic location. She says weight loss isn’t considered a black-and-white issue of simple exercise and diet, “The medical society now believes that we need to treat obesity like we treat hypertension, like we treat diabetes, and we need to use all the tools we can to help people with this problem because it’s really overtaking even smoking in health risks in our country. One out of every three persons is now obese and we’re seeing a lot of downstream diseases because of this like 29 different cancers that associated with being overweight.”

Guthrie County Hospital and Clinics offers a weight loss clinic in Stuart, Adair, Panora, and Guthrie Center, and includes personal coaching sessions focused on weight loss, diet, and exercise plans.
