A Jefferson man was taken into custody by Greene County law enforcement last Friday, after reports of a potential suicide attempt uncovered weapons and drugs on his property.

According to the Jefferson Police Department, at 8:42 p.m. on July 19th, a family member of the unnamed man alerted officers that the individual sounded suicidal. Officers arrived at the residence, located in the 900 block of West Harrison Street, where the man was reportedly held up with his 11-year-old son. Officers said the man made threats against his own life, but he was coaxed out of the house after several minutes. The individual was taken into custody and taken to the emergency room at the Greene County Medical Center for evaluation. His current condition is unknown.

Law enforcement investigated the property and located 16 firearms within, including two loaded handguns. The weapons were removed and given to a family member. Officers also found a large amount of narcotics and paraphernalia in plain sight while searching for the firearms. The items will be tested and charges are pending. The Greene County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa State Patrol assisted at the scene. Raccoon Valley Radio will bring you more information as it becomes official.
