Several rounds of severe weather resulted in damage and power outages in the Raccoon Valley Radio listening area Saturday afternoon and evening.
The National Weather Service issued four severe thunderstorm warnings for parts of Greene, Dallas and Guthrie counties from 4:14pm-8pm. The threats with the storms included ground-to-cloud lightning, heavy rainfall and over 58-miles-per-hour winds. Dallas County Emergency Management Coordinator A.J. Seely reported pea-sized hail in central Dallas County.
The storms resulted in damage in several areas and power outages. Seely reported an 8-10-inch diameter tree had fallen over in Dallas Center. Dallas County Sheriff Chad Leonard told Raccoon Valley Radio a tree had fallen over at 130th Street and L Place and a transformer was struck by lightning and caused a fire at the intersection of highways 169 and 44. Jefferson Public Works Director Dave Morlan said a tree had fallen over and was laying on power lines at Monroe and Walnut streets. He added that there were other tree limbs down throughout town. Adair and Guthrie County Emergency Management Coordinator Bob Kempf reported downed trees and a power line that was down in the City of Yale.
Alliant Energy Spokesperson Justin Foss said 945 people were without power in Jefferson. He said the cause was weather related and that power had been restored. Midland Power Cooperative reported 22 customers were without power and Sheriff Leonard said there was a power outage from MidAmerican Energy following the transformer being hit by lightning.
