The former school building in Grand Junction is starting to come down.
The Greene County School Board approved last December to demolish the building. The decision came after the Grand Junction City Council voted to have it torn down in August of 2017. Grand Junction City Councilmember Alan Robinson says they conducted public input meetings, and the majority of residents didn’t want to keep the building. He points out that the original plan was to have the contractor, Lansing Brothers, start the demolition this past May.
“But then again, we were also being told, as May got close into early July, that this group was in Marshalltown, and that devastating tornado that entire community is still dealing with. We like to think we’re a gracious people and we didn’t want to say, ‘Oh you need to yank them out of Marshalltown to come over and tear a building down.”
The project will take three to four weeks to complete. Once the building is demolished, the City of Grand Junction will take ownership of the property. Robinson notes that there are no definite plans for the property at this time.
