As the days continue to get hotter and dryer, the threat of fires grows at an equal rate.

Perry Fire Chief Chris Hinds offers some fire safety tips for the public as we progress through the summer months. First of all, he says it’s important to never leave a grill unattended, as an unexpected wind gust or stray animal can knock them over and start a grass or structure fire. Hinds also reminds people that burning yard waste is not allowed in Perry City limits this time of year, as the unpredictability of fire can lead to disaster in residential neighborhoods. “Too often with a little change of the wind or anything like that, a controlled burn can get out of hand. And in a dry year, the next thing you know you have acres and acres of ground that’s on fire. And as much as we enjoy going out and fighting fires, and that’s our job as the fire department, we’d just as soon stay out of big fires like that.”

Hinds emphasizes that caution and common sense are the two biggest keys when it comes to preventing fires during the summer. To learn more about warm weather fire safety, click the links below to listen to the two-part Perry Fareway Let’s Talk Dallas County program with Hinds.
