A Panora man faces over a dozen charges for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

According to the criminal complaint, following a civil dispute call to the Panora Police Department, Police Chief Matt Reising was contacted by the suspect’s wife later in the day on June 12th. She informed Reising that her husband, 45-year-old Duane Paul Cleek unlawfully possessed several firearms, located in a metal safe in his bedroom. The wife said that Duane tried to purchase a firearm several years ago and was unable to so she purchased it for him. A criminal background check showed that Duane has a felony operating while intoxicated third offense conviction from 1998.

Reising then executed a search warrant at the couple’s home in the 600 block of East Main Street on June 13th. Duane stated he had two handguns in a gun safe and the last time he took them out was the winter of 2018 for deer hunting. He also stated he lost the key to the safe, so he cut the lock off. Reising recovered 10 long guns and two revolvers. There was also miscellaneous ammunition and hunting gear. Duane said that he inherited some of the firearms from his family, he purchased or traded some, and one was purchased by his wife. He said he planned to give the firearms to his sons when they were old enough.

Duane was arrested and charged with 13 counts of possession of firearms, offensive weapons, and ammunition by a felon, a class D felony. He was booked into the Guthrie County Jail. Raccoon Valley Radio will bring you more information as it becomes official.
