Guthrie Center High School teachers will receive additional income for teaching college level courses next year.
The Guthrie Center School Board approved stipends for those teaching Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) classes at the school. Those with a masters degree in the area of English, math, and administration will receive an additional $1,865 per class containing up to nine students and $3,712 for classes with 10-25 students. Superintendent Steve Smith says the Board is following a trend of neighboring districts giving their instructors extra pay for this opportunity to students seeking a higher education, “So that was our purpose in trying to make sure that our folks that are here will want to continue to do that kind of thing and stay here, to give our kids those opportunities so that was the purpose of that.”
Instructors of any other course that DMACC would recognize as needing an adjunct instructor would receive a stipend of $934 per class, which for Guthrie Center is currently health careers. Those teaching career and technical education classes that don’t meet DMACC’s standards of employment are not eligible for additional reimbursement.
