There are only a few days left until the special election to fill a vacancy on the Jefferson City Council. With that in mind, we continue our coverage of the candidates.
Amelia Carman is a Jefferson native and a 2004 Jefferson-Scranton High School graduate. She has an associate’s degree from Des Moines Area Community College in land surveying. She works full-time with the Department of Transportation as a design technician in the right-of-way bureau. Carman also works as a matern and spanish interpreter for the Greene County Sheriff’s office.
She says there are four main issues she sees facing the City of Jefferson. Carman wants to see updates and repairs made to the City’s infrastructure, such as water and sewer lines. She also believes there needs to be new businesses that have high paying jobs to attract new people and convince those already living here to stay here. Another issue is more affordable housing options that are acceptable for the average income-earners of Jefferson. The last issue is providing more funding to all emergency services.
She is a member of the Jefferson Fire Department and serves on the Bell Tower motorcycle committee. She also has a 12-year-old son. Carman talks about why she is running for Jefferson City Council.
“I feel like the people of Jefferson need to have a voice in our community representative of the younger generation. Also I am the only female candidate running for city council. Jefferson needs to be more than a retirement community. I want to help our future generations to have a safe community with many employment opportunities, a place to raise families and to see the city grow.”
Carman is running against Darren Jackson, Michael Mentzer and Mark Wright in the special election on June 25th.
