The Guthrie County Relay for Life Chapter is already on their way to surpassing last year’s fundraising success for the American Cancer Society.
The Guthrie County chapter ranked ninth in the nation in 2018 for the amount raised per capita. Relay for Life Event Co-chair Becky Peterson says at this time last year they had raised about $24,000 and right now they have far exceeded that number with $47,000 leading up to their main event this Saturday. Peterson credits the community members who make this happen, “First, we have a great group of volunteers who work for Guthrie County Relay for Life and with those volunteers they go out and speak with our sponsors, they speak with other members of the community and raise funds that way. A lot of the volunteers have teams of their own that hold events and then we have really strong great teams in all of the cities in the county and they do very well. And it speaks volumes of how much their communities really support them in the (fund)raising that they do because they’re the ones that bring in all of this money.”
This year’s event theme is “20 Years of Stompin’ Out Cancer” and will take place from 4-10 p.m. Saturday in the event center on the Guthrie County Fairgrounds. The public is invited to wear their favorite boots to help stomp out cancer.
