Three second inning Greene County errors led to four Gilbert runs. The Tigers added three more third inning runs to build a 7-0 lead, and the visiting team won 11-6 over Greene County in Jefferson on Friday night in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference softball. The contest was heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. Gilbert improved to 9-10 overall and 5-2 in the conference while the Rams fell to 3-11, 2-5.
The Rams got to within 7-5 after four innings, but could get no closer. Eighth grader Emma Hoyle took the pitching loss. She went the first 2-plus innings with senior Jenna Beyers pitching in relief the rest of the way. Gilbert had 12 hits, two errors and left nine on base. The Rams had 10 hits, four errors, and left six on the bags.
Junior Izzy Bravard had three singles and drove in two runs for Greene County. Senior Megan Carey had two singles and one RBI with one hit each for eighth grader Olivia Shannon, junior Kyla Beyers, sophomore Karissa Stephenson, senior Jenna Beyers, and Hoyle. Jenna Beyers knocked in two runs with Hoyle picking up one run batted in. The lone extra base hit was a triple by Shannon to lead off the sixth in her only plate appearance.
The Rams play three times today in the West Marshall tournament at State Center.
